The Debt Half Paid

Amid the snowy pine
Upon a rise of ground
a place of frequent deer
their footprints all around
The stars bright and bold
The night horrible cold
I worked a debt of old.

A rake I cleared the snow
A bar I broke the frost
Three feet I had to go.
A pick I loosed the earth
Removed it with a spade
To dig my friend a grave
A debt I gladly paid.

A place we’d been afore
A place we liked to go
A place I’d be leaving him
aneath the stars and snow
I worked it with a spade
and dug my friend his grave
but felt the debt… half paid.
