Jack
23rd July 2007 – 19th April 2008

From the minute we met I was totally smitten
By this tiny, lovable, playful kitten
We were meant to have fun and spend our days in play
‘Til we were both old and set in our ways
It wasn’t to happen, you couldn’t stay long
But you left an impression that will always be strong
Smokey, shy, little grey friend
You were still just a baby at the end
Born in July, you didn’t see May
Trustingly in my arms you lay
Gazing up with amber eyes
Knowing I spoke only soothing lies
Hoping I could make you better
To break the chains that had you fettered
I felt so helpless, I had no way
To make you well and heal your pain
At last we had to face the truth
That you would not live out your youth
There was no cure, no easy answer
To end this disease, this virulent cancer
No magic drug or secret meaning
To end the suffering you were feeling.
Sleep in peace little Jack, I miss you so
I couldn’t keep you, you had to go
Entrusted to my loved ones gone before
To hold you and love you ‘till I am no more
And once again can share in your days
Smooth your silky fur and watch your gentle ways
To play and be friends for ever and yet
To always be Mummy and pet.
