Sitting, watching a cooking show with my wife
(Giada of all people)
I reached down beside my chair
To pet my dog
And felt nothing.
No dog
Just air.
Christ, what was I thinking…
I never watch cooking shows with my wife
(Especially Giada)
And of course
My dog wouldn’t be there
We had taken her today
And she was gone.
Habits die hard
Every night for years
She had laid on her little bed
Beside my chair
And I had stroked her
Without thought
Not even aware of what I was doing.
But now
Just air
And her memory
hanging heavy in my mind.
We miss her so much,
