Ode to Doober (1991-2007)
Doober, you have gone to doggie heaven
where you can romp and play.
You’ll get bones and treats aplenty
every single day.
You no longer feel the pain
old bones and joints can give.
You’ll never shiver from the cold
in the place you now live.
Your journey here has ended,
God called you home above.
Though you have gone from us
Your death will not diminish our love.
We’ll miss your curly fur
and ears of softest silk,
the mornings sharing cereal
when I let you drink the milk.
Your fringed tail no longer wags,
happy barks are heard no more,
but in our hearts you’ll forever be
lying by the bedside on the floor.
I remember your first night with us,
all night whining at the door.
Until we came to see you
then you loved us even more.
I remember you as a pup,
running through the tall grass.
We never could keep up with you,
you always ran so fast.
I remember those big brown eyes
in the sweetest face ever seen,
looking out at the drive thru window
begging for ice cream.
When your humans all piled in the truck
there was never a more excited pup
than when one of us looked down
and said “Come on, Doo, up.”
You loved to play tug of war,
no socks were ever safe.
No toy ever stood a chance
against our brave and furry waif.
There are too many memories to count
that filled sixteen years of love.
You’ll always be our little Doo
who’ll be there to greet us in Heaven above.
