Guinea by Sheryl Levell / Your mummy

The Day you went away

You were wrapped in a blanket
the day I went to say goodbye,
it was the longest day I cannot tell a lie.

Hello my darling, mummy is here,
how could I tell you your end was near.

We walked around pretending all was fine,
all the while knowing it would soon be time.

I took you in and held you close,
saying I Love you, I Love you,
while you were taking your deadly dose.

After, you looked so good,
I saw the cat that had
on that birdcage stood,
those many years ago and
now the memories flow.

I was honoured to be with you for this,
your final breath,
you had been there for me
so this my gift to you, your death.

I stayed a while and brushed
your fur but you’re no longer there,
you felt cold already and
your eyes just stare,
I should have been the
last thing you see but
that I couldn’t bear.

Your eyes no longer see me
but mine see you still,
forever young you stay
while I feel like
I’m running up a hill.

You are home now,
the cats all sleep
on this hallowed ground,
there is no order
.
