Heidi by Liz Larson / Mama

Heidi was rescued from the shelter in Helena, MT in either 2001 or 2002. She was meant to live with someone else, but that person died. She then lived with my mother until she moved. Then Heidi became ours – sometime in 2003.

Heidi was a sweet, loving cat. She had lovely pale green eyes and a super temperament. I loved the smudge on her nose – adorable. She wasn’t thrilled bout living with other cats, but she held her own. She demanded attention when she wanted it – usually by jumping up to sit with me and clawing my arm. She loved to sit with us and to be brushed, She would purr and purr and purr.

Heidi was pretty much an indoor cat but she did venture out a couple of times last year and I think she enjoyed it. She never stayed out long though.

The one regret I have is that I didn’t pay as much attention to her as I did to the other cats. While I cared about her, she was not my favorite and sometimes I think she got lost in the crowd. She did love to sleep with me and I remember those nights when we snuggled together.

Heidi died on January 23, 2007 when our house burned. She was unable to escape from the smoke. I think of her often and I wish I had been a better owner to her. I do love her but I wonder if she knew.

Somewhere out there now I hope she is having fun and basking in the sun. And if I’m ever lucky enough to see her again I will make sure she knows she was loved on this earth.
