Highlands Merlin

Jan. 18 1991 —- Nov. 27 2000

Black Labrador Retriever

Merlin was born to Highlands Mister Moses and Highlands Lady Mace.

Due to an eye defect he was sold as a pet.

His owners returned him after being abused for 10 months.

He was our constant companion and gave us as much affection as

we gave him. His tail was in constant wag!

He was affectionate to everyone as we called him

“Friend to all the World”.

He was always at the door when you came home or would greet you at

the fence with a bark and wagging tail.

On Sunday November 19,2000 he went to retrieve the newspaper.

While running he came to a halt cried and had no weight bearing

on his left leg. We were informed that Merlin had Osteosarcoma

(bone cancer) which was the cause of the fracture.

Treatment consisted of amputation with a possible 6-month life span;

adding chemotherapy could possibly increase Merlin’s life to 10-12 months.

His other leg had been injured before he was 10 months old he was already

limping on that leg which had also developed a severe case of arthritis.

We had to make the worst decision in our lives.

We could not think about ourselves but what would be best for Merlin.

At the Animal Hospital he was happy and wagging his tail.

We put his collar and leash on gave him a favorite “cookie” then told him

it was time we needed to let go of our friend family member and loyal companion.

We got on the floor with Merlin he was given a sedative and a final injection,

his tail wagging continued to the end and within 15 seconds he was gone

to join our other pets and wait for the rest of us.
