Maggie by Beth

I must admit that I didn’t think much of Maggie when I first met her. She was an outdoor cat that the neighbors had taken in when her original owners moved away. Maggie and I generally avoided each other for several years. Over the past year however I began to spend time with her either petting her putting milk out for her or sometimes brushing her thick hair. She loved the attention and I grew to love her. I knew that every time I came home
I would hear her meow.

The last couple of weeks were different – she didn’t meow nor did she hound me for milk or anything else. I figured she was just going through a phase. This past Sunday my husband and I came home and found that she was dying in front of our house.

The bright sunlight was beating down on her and her eyes were watering uncontrollably. We moved her to a grassy shaded area next to her house.

I kept petting her and my husband told her to go to sleep. Finally she let go and we cried. I can’t believe that I’ll never hear that loud meow when I get home again or have to watch carefully as I back the car out but I know that after 17 years Maggie was ready to go home for good.

We miss you Maggie!
