Magic came to us as a 14-year-old cruelty/neglect case. He was my first Maryland rescue, blind, with a serious heart condition, and extremely traumatized … frightened enough to bite. Hard.
Over the next 3-1/2 years, he learned that only love lived here. He was safe and well-fed, and the necessary medications to control his heart and other issues were well hidden in Braunsweiger. And hands were only for caressing. And sometimes for grooming.
He learned to love to be close. He also learned that lightning-fast reflexes on his part totally ruined grooming efforts on my part. He perfected this.
I learned to lower my standards. He learned to love me. And now he is gone, and the space in the back of my chair where he used to wedge himself is empty.
I know you had to go, but I miss you. And I’m pretty sure that you won’t have to deal with grooming there in Heaven.
