Maya Hanson by David Hanson / Dave

Maya was an abandoned cat that was living on my doorstep, because I fed her and was the only one that treated her nice. She was known as “Christy” then, and she always seemed to be waiting for me when I came home. When my long-time indoor companion “Kitty” passed away, I ended up adopting the supposedly wild Christy and re-naming her “Maya”. Maya became a good little housecat, well trained and eventually very affectionate. She lived with me for the last two years of her total fifteen years.

After being devastated by the loss of Kitty, I had tried not to become too attached to Maya. As the years went by, however, she bonded with me, and I with her. Unfortunately we only had a couple of years together, as kidney disease made her unrecoverably sick, and I was forced to put her to sleep. I realized at the end that I loved Maya, as she had become a quite important part of my life.

Her passing from this world has left an empty void. Every time that I see my bed’s comforter I think of how she would climb up on my chest when I went to bed, and knead the plush comforter with her front paws, half closing her eyes as if in ecstasy (and probably thinking about her mom’s soft tummy). She was a sweet cat, and I am so thankful that we were able to enrich each other’s lives.

So Godspeed little Maya, and when you’re not in heaven, feel free to have a little spirit catnap on my bed. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

With Love,
Maya Hanson
