McDuff by Helene / Me

I begged you not to leave me
and with all your might
you tried.
I rested my head upon your
back and through the night I cried.
Your fur was wet and salty
when I awoke, to find
my best friend in the world
had left me far behind.
Every day I think of you
I pretend you’re on my bed.
Reality just aches so much,
under the blanket I hide my head.
On the porch I sit at night and stare up
upon the sky.
I ask the heavens if you’re there
and to help me to get by.

For Duffy,
