Aug. 1989 —- Still with Us
Several years ago I worked as a veterinary technician
at a mixed animal practice. Our clinic was in charge of pound animals
for the town and I was in charge of putting them down if necessary.
One day we had this tiny long-haired white and orange kitten with
extra toes on his front feet that was due to be euthanized.
After some discussion between my boss and other members of the
clinic staff it was decided we needed a clinic cat.
Thus “Otis” became a valued member of the clinic family.
Otis had free run of the hospital during the day and became the official
client greeting committee when he was not sleeping or tearing
holes in the cat food bags in the display area.
Eventually my boss decided to pursue other opportunities and
Otis moved in with me and my parents while one of the other clinic vets
was getting another practice going across town.
The other vet got her building finished and Otis resumed his daily duties
at the new place.
The time came when I married quit my job and moved out of town to a
dairy farm with my new husband. I would occasionally see Otis over the
next six years when I was purchasing cow supplies at the clinic.
He had grown from a small kitten to a huge twenty pounder!
He would always greet me warmly. I missed him alot.
Then we got the news that that my former colleague would be closing
up shop and moving the clinic to her home forty miles away.
I also found out that she would not be taking Otis with her.
I asked my husband if Otis could come live with us and he said no.
I was so mad. I had made peace with the fact Otis was going to be
put down as I knew another home had not been found for him.
On the following Christmas Eve while I was busy with family my
husband disappeared down the basement.
The next thing I knew there was Otis strolling across the kitchen floor like
he had lived there all his life. I was surprised to say the least!
It seems my husband had been in cahoots with the vet ever since
I asked him about Otis in the first place.
It is now almost a year later and the return of Otis is the best
Christmas present I ever got!
