Pepper by Chad Coulliette / Susan and Chad

TRIBUTE TO PEPPER

Wonderful, beautiful dog, you did your duty well.
You were always there for us, protecting and helping.
Pepper, we miss you and love you.

Happy companion, loyal protector and guard
I never imagined it could be so hard
To come home and not find you there
To listen and look for you everywhere
But only to find the empty house and yard
You’re not here in the place where you starred

Obedient laborer, intuitive friend and great heart
It is with much sorrow that we part
You crossed your paws to pray before eating
And always were there, looking for our greeting
You were most unusual right from the start
You learned everyone’s name, you were so smart

Observant shepherd, unfailing helper and buddy true
You took care of my bunny and let her chase you
Because you could never be anything but good
And somehow caring for others you understood
You watched over children and animals and me, too
Now I think of all you gave and I feel so blue

You belonged to my nephew, who tragedy had found
He was paralyzed and for a long time, house bound
Your ear was always attuned to his needs
Aiding in his care, we could sing of your deeds
Even now I can’t help but listen for your sound
As you answered his calls and hurried around.
