Ralphy by Jim & Mary McCann / Jim & Mary

Ralph or Ralph-a-doodle is what we called him most of the time. My husband and I decided to take Ralphy into our home in 2001. He was about 8 years old and wasn’t doing well where he was and was urinating all over my mother-in-law’s home. We couldn’t stand seeing him in a cage so we took a chance and invited him
to live with us. We began to see lots of life in Ralphy. He continued to purr, jump, run and meow….
He had life back in him and was re-born.

One day we decided to let this house cat outside to explore. Ralphy loved it! His eyes wide open and his ears alert and attentive to his surroundings. After 8 years of being an indoor cat, he was finally able to explore nature, hands-on. Each day Ralphy found new things to look at, smell, and rub his fur on. His eyes opened wider each time he was out there and
his senses took it all in.

Ralphy began to meow by the door so that he could take a nature walk. Mostly, he liked listening to the birds sing, but also liked to smell the flowers, eat the grass, chase the squirrels, and lay lazily on the deck in the sun. His life had changed and he was very happy
with his new surroundings.

After two years, Ralphy and our family moved into a new home. This place was much bigger than his two room apartment, but did not give the freedom of the outdoors to him any longer. Another change for Ralph and his desire for living began to diminish. He began to sleep more and more and in very isolated places. We were unaware of his tumor that grew to the size of an apple in his stomach and
finally took over his body and mind.

On the day of his death, Ralphy knew that it was time. They say animals know. He laid by Jim’s feet the entire day and although he was weak, took all his energy to greet me when I came home from work. I laid with him, touched his fur and listened to him purr for the last time.
He was tired.

At the vet, Ralphy’s diagnosis was poor. The cancer grew and taken over his vital organs. Ralphy laid his head in the palm of my hand and curled himself in a comfortable position. I whispered to him, “…it’s ok Ralph, go to sleep buddy…we love you don’t be afraid..” He gently sighed and rested his head for the last time in my hand.
Ralphy went home, pain free.

The love that Ralphy gave my husband and me over the last two years was immeasurable. He was very affectionate and a good listener. We will miss you Ralphy!!!! Every day we will remember your loving memories and treasure the love you gave us. Thank you Ralph-a-doodle. You are forever in our hearts.

We love you Ralph,
Ralphy
