Dog

I remember when my father was in the Navy we were

living in Pensacola Florida lived there for 4 years.

I had to be about 7 or 8 we made it a family day so we went to our

local animal shelter to look at pets I didn’t think we were going to get one.

We looked and looked. Then I spotted this dog sitting in the corner hiding,

to me he was sad. While all the other dogs we at the doors greeting everyone

he was hiding. I begged to get him so we did.

They said he was abused by the original owner. They were trying to get him

to be a bird dog but he was gun shy you could tell he was.

Every time he saw a bird he would point at them. And he also climbed trees.

He was afraid of brooms and anytime you raised your voice waved

your hands etc. But things got better with a little love and understanding .

Oh he starting trusting us and he knew all we wanted was from him

to just be himself . Sam would chase the snow cone man for a snow cone,

of course it scared the life out of the driver because he was driving a

little three wheel cart my mom had to tell the man don’t

be afraid he just wanted a snow cone.

Then he would pull his lips over his teeth and start dancing with his

front paws(we called it tap dancing and smiling) just for some pickled haring.

And we tried to teach him to play fetch but he had his own version.

I also remember when my mom went to go have my sister,

Cathy boy was Sam really done and out. But when my mom came home

in three days if you could have been there Sam was actually crying real

tears of happiness. I may have picked out Sam but he was my mom’s dog.

But he loved all my sisters and me the same.

I am 38 years old and I still remember dear Sam.

And I also find myself thinking of him and wondering if he

made it to heaven?

We had him put to sleep because he was going blind and his

health was not good.

My mom told me this and it broke my heart.

I just hope I can see all my pets that I have had

when I go to heaven.
