I first remember when Snarfy came into my life. She was the first duck I ever owned and became hooked on waterfowl because of her. I found her when she was a one day old hatchling along the canals where I live. I looked for a mother duck but none was around so at first I left her thinking a mother duck would adopt her as some do
when they see lost hatchlings.
But evidently she thought I was her mother and followed me around for hours and no matter what I did she came back to me so being the softhearted person I am I took her home. My grandma was surprised when I came home from my walk with a fluffy little yellow duckling.
She was the best friend I ever could’ve had. She always greeted me and made me happy no matter what kind of mood I was in. She was spoiled, she liked warm or hot water baths at night and in the morning. She liked to eat bread or oatmeal, her favorite toy was her own wing feathers that
she shed in the winter.
When I would go out to feed her she would quack at me and do a little head bow kind of motion she adopted as her way of saying hello and I love you momma. When she did quack at me it sounded like she was saying momma all the time. I have many fond memories of her and will always cherish
her time with me.
The last thing she saw before she died was me and her daughters Jinenji and Akamatsu. She did not have many babies but the ones she did I cherished like my own. Some may call it mean but when she laid her eggs I took them from her and incubated them myself, because when they hatched I would be the first thing they saw and they would imprint on me and the second thing they saw would be their mother and they
would imprint on her too.
I loved all the ducks I have raised over a span of a few years but Snarfy was by far my favorite. The sad thing about her death though was both of her daughters died a few minutes apart after she did. The only thing I have left of her is her son Kenny who is a Plymouth Barred Rock Rooster. Yes, he is a chicken it is a strange story but to make it short when I found Snarfy’s eggs there were only two but I went out
a few minutes after there
was one more egg.
I assumed it was a duck egg so I took it and put it in my incubator and about a month later all three hatched. Two ducklings and one chicken. So I figured out where it came from one of my neighbor’s hens laid an egg in our coop and
I hatched it.
Snarfy didn’t know the difference between a duck and a chicken all she saw was three ducklings and thats the way it was. Kenny grew up thinking he is a duck but one that crows at four in the morning every morning.
So even though Snarfy is gone her memory will live on always in the hearts of my family and her son Kenny who moped for weeks after her death and the deaths
of his two sisters.
I loved her very much and always will she will never be forgotten and I have memories of her. There will be pictures of her posted when I get them developed.
THANK YOU SNARFY FOR YOUR LOYAL FRIENDSHIP AND COMPANIONSHIP OF NINE YEARS AND I WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND CHERISH YOU FOREVER!! WE WILL MEET AGAIN SOMEDAY SOON BUT NOT TO SOON.
