Sooty by Kelly Layton / Kelly

There is a story behind me getting my cats, I started working for this company and we got sent out to site on this real wet stormy day. At the customers site the receptionist found this baby kitten which my workmate decided to take home and care for.

Well about a year later my friend said that the cat was pregnant and did I want a kitten. I wasn’t really allowed any animals at the place I was staying but as soon as I saw these kittens – well I couldn’t resist it. There were three of them – one ginger one, one black & white one and one pure black one. My friend was keeping the ginger one and since I couldn’t decide, I took both. The black and white one is named Patches and the black one sooty.

Sooty was a real trouble maker, always getting into mischief but loved her time alone with me, always smooching and getting under the blankets. She was never afraid of anything, always terrorizing the dogs and nothing ever bothered her.

Well Saturday 30 August 2003, I was backing out of the driveway to go and drop a dress off when I heard this cat meow then the kids telling me I ran over a cat. I got out and ran around the side of my car and to my disbelief I see my pure black cat – my Sooty Lala – dead. I was in shock, I couldn’t stop crying. For the next few days I couldn’t help but blame myself (if only I had left 5 minutes earlier, or did something different). After my family helping me through I realized, I couldn’t have changed what had happened. Although I miss her with all my heart…her sister Patches is still with me, she has gotten me through
this with her pure love.

Sooty is buried next to my dog Daniel and chicken Taz on my parents farm where I know she would love. She will always be in my heart and never forgotten.

Forever in my heart,
Sooty
