Cocker Spaniel
We miss him so much already.
He has been my constant companion since I first brought him home.
From the time I would come in the door til the time I would leave
he was constantly by my side.
He slept snuggled up in the crook of by legs.
He had gotten older and sometimes
he couldn’t jump up on the bed by himself.
So either my husband or I would lift him up and
he would snuggle right up with us.
If I got up during the night
Trampy got up with me and when I came back to bed
I would lift him up again and he would snuggle right back in.
All the times sitting at my desk typing away on my computer
Trampy would nuzzle my leg letting me know
he wanted to get under the desk to sit by my feet.
While we watched tv
Trampy would jump up on the recliner to snuggle with me.
He was always such a comfort to me.
Whenever I was upset or sad he was always there to comfort me.
Lick my hand or leg to let me know that he knew I was sad.
He was still so puppyish.
He was so excited to see me whenever I would come in.
My husband always said that when I hadn’t come home yet
Trampy would wait by the door.
When he would hear my car pull up
his little stubby tail would go a mile a minute
til I would come through the door.
I got Trampy ten years ago. He was 10 months old.
I had another little cocker spaniel Teddy.
A friend had Trampy but they were allergic to him and
wanted to find a good home for him.
So I thought it would be nice to have 2.
My other little cocker spaniel Teddy had not been neutered yet
so my dad took him for me to to have the procedure.
Teddy died during the procedure.
They said he had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia.
So I decided to go ahead and get Trampy from my friend.
He was such a comfort even back then and
helped me get over the loss of Teddy.
I have certainly never regretted getting Trampy.
He was such a wonderful companion.
My husband and I met and were married in July 1996.
Trampy loved my husband right away.
We were a joined family with my husband’s cat Red my cat Moonie
and then later a stray cat Jackie joined our family.
On Thursday December 20 2001
my niece came to visit and Trampy was fine.
He was excited to see her. We were listening to some music
when I noticed Trampy was not by my side.
I knew this was unusual so I went to find him.
He was in the bedroom lying beside the bed.
I called for my husband. Trampy felt cold and he was shaking.
My husband lifted him to the bed.
We phoned the vet and after she asked questions
she said she thought it would be best if we keep him home that night
but to bring him in first thing the next morning.
Friday morning he was very weak.
My husband carried him to the car for me.
At the vet I had to carry him in.
The vet said she wanted to keep him that day and
she did some lab tests.
She phoned later and said he had pancreatitis.
I visited him that afternoon.
My husband and I went back to visit him the next morning again.
They were only open til noon and I was upset
because I would not be able to visit with him again til Monday because
they would be closed on Sunday.
The vet told me it was a very serious condition.
I asked if he could die from this and she said it was possible.
I was afraid he would die but I really thought he would pull through.
She said he would probably still have to be hospitalized through Christmas
but he didn’t make it til Christmas.
My niece and I went to church Saturday evening
while my husband stayed home to watch the basketball game.
When we came back I could tell from the look
on my husband’s face that something was wrong.
He told me that the vet had called and that Trampy didn’t make it.
My husband had to struggle with
knowing all by himself til we had gotten home.
We brought home Trampy’s body and
let our cats come in and grieve with us.
We wrapped trampy in the cover that we kept on our bed.
We buried him the next day on Sunday in our back yard.
We put my silk wedding bouquet on his grave site.
My husband said that when fall comes
we should plant potatoes and carrots on his grave.
it wouldn’t look very pretty to other people
I guess but Trampy loved raw potatoes
whenever I peeled them and he loved carrots as treats.
My husband read Psalm 23 and we said a prayer.
We loved trampy very much and
we miss him.
