Peekapoo

I remember the day we went to the animal shelter

and picked out a dog. I walked up and down passed the cages,

I was five years old. My dad had brought my sister brother and I to

get a dog. Mom had wanted to get a puppy from down the street,

One of those Labrador retrievers but my dad as always went against

my mother and while she was at work. So we picked out Peekapoo,

he was five years old already. He sat on my lap all the way home.

When we got home we put him in the back yard.

He was always been an outside dog but he was so cute.

My mother was upset at first but grew to love him calling him her

other son. He never learned any tricks and he never doubted our love

he was loyal. Anytime people other than his family came passed the yard

he would try his hardest to look mean and bark but it didn’t usually work.

They would say oh look at the cute doggie.

HE barked at cats and went crazy barking when other dogs came

near the yard. HE was very protective of his territory.

But as he sat out in the yard he never once scared of the birds

that would perch on his food bowl and help them selves.

He could sit right next to the birds and they never flew away when he

moved around. My mother and father divorced when I was six but we

brought him with us. I was very much attached to dusty

I was the one who walked him and brushed his fur because my mother

worked nights and slept during the day she never had much time to do

anything to the dog. I Loved him alot talked to him like he was a person.

He would look at me with his head cocked and listened.

Dusty never judged me as other people did he never questioned or argued

he would jump up on my pants and stand on his back feet and get me all dirty.

But I didn’t care.

I took dusty for walks all the time as I grew older.

He peed on every tree we came to and I stopped to let him rest.

There were times when dusty got lose and I had to chase him around the

neighborhood It wasn’t fun at the time but now that I am sitting here remembering,

It was a good time for dusty and he was living a happy life.

I grew up and dusty always stayed the same.

We gave dusty the nicest dog house big and comfortable in the back yard.

But in the winter in rain or snow rain or shine that Dusty never once

stepped into his dog house. We said it was because he was afraid of small

spaces but maybe he just stood out there guarding.

Even when it was two degrees he would bury himself in the snow

or curl up. Dusty stood right out in the middle of the yard and

barked at people passing. HE was truly the greatest dog and I shall never

have one again. A month before I turned 15 this year on march 24 2000.

I woke up late I was upset because I might miss the bus.

I got dressed and like always got ready to go out and feed my dog.

It was a chilly morning. I had grabbed the bag of dog food and rushed

out the door with my bag pack on.

My mom had gone to work and my sister didn’t live with us anymore.

My brother had gone to school early and I was last out of the house.

I filled Dustys water bowl looking over at dusty who was far away from me

I realized something was wrong at first glance because he hadn’t woke

up when I opened the door. I called his name “Dusty”.

When I didn’t rouse him I dropped the bag. Then I started screaming to him.

AS I got closer I saw he was dead. He was laying face down on the ground.

And then I couldn’t stop screaming. My neighbor came out and saw him

I ran in and called my mom. I stayed over at my neighbors till she came

home really quick. We called animal control and she said it looked

like another dog attacked him. We went to the school to get my brother

and came back to the house. That day I dug into the earth with a

shovel three feet. I had to bury him I cried.

He was my family I had to bury my Dusty. As we soon found out

our dog was not the only one Five dogs and three cats were killed.

By two pitbulls In the end a man who saw it attacking his dog came

out and hit one over the head with a baseball bat the other got away

but it killed the pittbull. The other one was taken in by the police

there was a whole day search for it. My Dusty was the first to be killed

by those monsters. They had been trained by the owners

across the street to fight.

They murdered my dog but they split town and were never

seen again. My heart is broken my dog is dead.

I can see him there in the last seconds. I never heard him

bark though standing there protecting the house.

They must have come at him so fast he never had time to do anything.

He may have died in his sleep.

Perhaps he barked and then they attacked him but he didn’t

show fear for that I am sure of. My Dusty is the bravest of them all.

I love him very much and it been 6 months since then.

Dusty sleeps in Heaven now I’m sure.

He was loyal loyal to the end.
