I had a VERY happy Guinea Pig until it died two summers ago. He was a
black abyssinian and lead a wonderfu but very unusual life. One day we
let him play in the yard in a big area. He loved it; so what we did was
let him live in a bush in our yard. He was in heaven! We left a cage open
outside of the bush so he could run in to eat and drink water. Whenever
it would rain he would be put in the cage and came inside. Well one day
we went to the movies and it started to rain just as we got there. We
thought our pet would be fine in his solid roof and walled cage. Well he
wasn’t smart enough to get in his cage- and it just so happened that it
flooded that night and swept him into the neighbors yard. They came out
and saw him. They called us and told us about him and said that he was
still alive!!! But when I came and got him I realized sadly that our
little Guinea Pig had drowned in the flood. We cried for a long time. I
still can cry just thinking about the terrible way he left this world.
But during his lifetime he was the happiest little ‘pig’ in the entire world.
While he was happy outdoors in hindsight I think that if I had to do it all over again,
I would always have placed him in his cage and put him safely indoors
whenever I was going out. A hard lesson to learn but one I will now
always follow should I ever get another pet like him.
Sincerely,
Caroline
