Kitten
In early October 1999 my wife was waiting outside our apartment
building for a ride to work (this is about 5am in the morning).
This kitten came out of no where and clawed its way up onto
her shoulder and nestled there. She put it back down and told it
to go away but it did the same thing.
She brought it upstairs for me to feed and keep warm.
When I went back to sleep I brought it in the bed with me and
it crawled down to the pit of my stomach where it slept.
About 4 hours later she told me to take it outside when I leave
for school which I did. It starting meowing and following
me….I looked back and said “Sorry kitty” and started running
to the bus stop …it started running too.
I looked back again and it was gone….I felt bad all day
(I left at about 10:30am).
After school I stopped by my wife’s workplace and told her
what had happened. She said that if it was still there we would keep it.
We got back home at about 3pm and as soon as we stepped out of
our ride home the kitten came out from behind some bushes
and rubbed against our legs. We kept her and called her HUGGLES.
We estimated that she was at least a few weeks old.
In January when we moved to a new place we couldn’t keep her
without a security deposit on her so she stayed at my wife’s sister’s place.
In late February I was in Canada and my wife and her kids were visiting her
sister’s place. My stepson said “Mommy we gotta take Huggles
home today or else something bad is gonna happen to her.”
My wife didn’t heed this and 3 days later Huggles was
found run over by a car.
She was a dear and special cat to us because of the way we
found her…we thought she came to us and “chose” us…
there’s nothing we can do to amend for the mistake of keeping
her somewhere she was in danger. The last time I
had seen her before I left I was mean to her;
I had disciplined her for something.
