LACY by Alicia Burkhardt / Mommy

This story begind in 1993 a warm day, I was seven years old and so excited because we just puchased this great dane puppy. She was the only blue merle puppy out of 11 pups. She spent the whole car ride on my lap asleep. At about age 7 mon, she was very rough while playing and sometimes my mom thought she was to aggressive, but she was only playing. So my mom decided to find her a home,i screamed and cried and so they decided we would keep her! I was so happy. For the next 8 years she never left my side; she slept in my bed every night, she was my best friend.

At age 8 she was at the vet for a exam and he found out she needed to be spayed to prevent this growth from growing; it was a small lump nothing serious, so she went in and was spayed. She came home from surgery and couldnt walk, all she did was sleep; she finally got better and then she started having seizures; well she started to improve and we went for walks and she was a happy girl.

A couple weeks later she was in her bed and I went out in the morning to check on her and she had went potty in her bed, which was not like her, so I knew something was wrong with her. I didn’t tell my mom because I didn’t want her to be put to sleep. She was also having trouble getting up, so I helped her up and tried to get her excited and attempted a walk; well she collapsed as soon as she was up and moving. Well I finally went in crying and told my mom and dad.

The vet was closed for the weekend so I spent all of Friday, Saturday, Sunday taking care of her. She stopped eating so I force fed her best I could; she also couldn’t get up and go to the restroom so I used all my strength and took her outside to potty a few times a day.

On Sunday I took her to my grandmas house(right across the street). Lacy really loved her, so I managed to get her across the street and my grandma got her to eat 2 dog biscuits which wasn’t much but atleast she ate something.

Well she didn’t improve and by Monday the vet was finally open so we made an appt. I said I didn’t want to put her to sleep so my mom said we would just take her in to see what was wrong with her.

Well we had to put her on a stretcher to get her in the vet office and laying there she had some blood and urine leaking out; we got her in there and he said he would do a blood test to see what was wrong but he didn’t know if she would make it the 3 days it would take. He was pushing around her abdomen and felt a lump. He wasn’t sure what it was and he wanted to make sure it didn’t rupture and wasn’t bleeding internally, so he put a needle in her abdomen and when he pulled the needle put it was full of blood. So he said there was nothing he could do. So her being my dog I had to make the decision. I was only 15 so this was extremely hard for me.

While the vet was doing the shot she lifted her had up and looked right at me right before she passed. I think she was saying goodbye and I miss her so much. I will never forget all the fun we had and how much she made me laugh. She was a goofy girl.

With Love,
LACY
