Little Bit by Jeannie Prince / Your buddy Jeannie

In September of 2003, Mama told me that she would buy me a dog for my birthday that year. I had been looking for a dog and I found one near here in Eastman. There was an ad in the paper advertising puppies to good homes. The ad said that there were both males and females in the litter. I called the number and asked if there were any females left. I received the answer “There’s one.” “I want her”, I said and then asked for directions to his home.

The next day Mama and I went to the breeder’s home to pick up my new puppy. The breeder brought her out along with her parents. Both of them were black and tan shorthaired dachshunds. The breeder said that these two were miniatures and so it followed that my new puppy was also a miniature. When he put her in my hand, I noticed that her entire length from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail would fit entirely in my left palm. When I saw this I thought, “What a little bit of dog.” Then I smiled because she was my little bit of dog. On the way home Mama asked me, “What are you going to name her?”

I couldn’t think of but two names and one of them was Little Bit. This is the one I picked and it suited her perfectly. Little Bit and I had some wonderful times. At first, she would chew on things (such as the hems of my dresses–Mama would fix these) and then she would chew on me (I didn’t mind). After awhile, she grew out of her puppy stage and said “good-bye” to the chewing. She was such a funny dog! She had a cute little way of cocking her head to the right side and looking at you as if she were saying, “isn’t that interesting? I didn’t know that!” She also had a cute little run, her legs were so short she almost hopped when she ran.

She had such beautiful soulful eyes and she was so smart! I’d go lots of times to the office here in my home. I’d always tell her where I was going and when I’d come back. She’d wait until I came back most of the time. If I was working on the computer, she’d come in the office and wait until I finished and then we’d go back in the living room.
She did the cutest thing!

Sometimes, she’d let me go in the office and then after about 30 minutes, she’d call me to come back in the living room. When I left from the office and then went to the dining room, I’d find her just inside the living room, peeking around the corner with her head cocked to one side as if she were saying, “so there you are!” I’d always answer, “Yes, here I am.” She is alway and ever my little buddy and my best friend.

I love you, Little Bit,
Little Bit
