Lucky by Kaylin Zimmerman

Lucky was a playful kitten.
She would romp and play with her sisters and one brother.
Always happy always pain free.
It seemed as though she had limitless energy.

Until sickness struck.
She was in the basement on the cold
hard cement floor stretching and meowing loudly.
I told myself I should have known.
I should of seen it coming.
She was the only one
who still had her umbilical cord
at four months of age.
Well she certainly didn’t have it now
and it appeared to be yanked off.

Well my grandma and I gave her warm milk and
chicken broth. She seemed to be getting better.
In fact she even starting playing again.
So on the morning of July 7 2001
we took her and her siblings outside to play.
Lucky got to feel the warm sunshine
on her soft fur for the first time.
And as always she played with the other kittens.
We had no idea it wouldn’t only be
the first time for the warm sunshine
but also the last.

7-8-01: Lucky was in throes of death and shortly died
in a matter of seconds. The weird thing was that she died at midnight
which made it the 8th. We buried her that “morning”.
I never stopped crying
so I cried myself to sleep
and almost cried when I woke up.

Miss you Lucky and I love with all my heart.

Love,

Mommy

Lucky
