Cat
IN A BARN HIGH IN THE LOFT A LITTER OF KITTENS ALL
SWEET AND SO SOFT.
BUT ONE LITTLE KITTEN IN PARTICULAR HE CAUGHT OUR EYE.
BECAUSE EVERY TIME WE TRIED TO LEAVE HED FOLLOW AND CRY.
HE WAS ONLY FOUR WEEKS OLD AND NOT YET WEANED
BUT HE WAS THE CUTEST THING WED EVER SEEN.
AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT WE TOOK HIM HOME,
NOW JAKE OUR OTHER CAT WONT BE ALONE.
A LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE FUZZ BALL HAND FEEDING WAS A TASK
THIS LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE FUZZ BALL WE NAMED MAX.
AS THE YEARS WENT BY HE BROUGHT US MUCH JOY
THE LIGHT FLICKERING OFF THE SUN WAS HIS FAVORITE TOY.
HED MAKE US LAUGH WITH HIS ANTIC QUIRKS
LIKE RUNNING AND CLIMBING UP THE WOODWORK.
HED LOOK AT ME AND MEOW WHICH SOUNDED LIKE MAMA HE CALLED
THEN UP ON MY LAP AGAIN HE WOULD CRAWL.
OH AND HE LOVED HIS DADDY HOW ROUGH THEY WOULD PLAY
AND DADDY WAS ALWAYS BLEEDING WHEN HE WALKED AWAY.
THEY WERE TRUE BUDDIES DADDY AND MAX
THEYD ALWAYS PLAY WITH THE GROCERY SACKS.
HE ALSO LOVED GRANDMA AND GRANDPA IT WAS SO SWEET TO SEE,
JUST HOW GENTLE HE WOULD BE.
THEN THERE CAME THE DOG MAGGIE AND THEN TAYLOR TOO
AND IT TOOK SOME TIME BUT ALL THEIR LOVE GREW.
SOMETIMES THEYD PLAY AND SOMETIMES THEY'D FIGHT
BUT WATCHING IT ALL WAS QUITE A SIGHT.
AND WHEN THE DAY WAS OVER AND IT WAS TIME FOR BED,
AGAIN ON MY CHEST MAX WOULD LAY HIS HEAD.
HED CUDDLE AND KISS ME AND GIVE ME SOME HECK
THEN HED WRAP HIS LITTLE PAW AROUND MY NECK.
HE STARTED GETTING SICK SO WE WENT TO THE VET
HE COULDNT EAT SO SURGERY WAS SET.
HE SEEMED TO DO FINE BUT THEN TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORSE
AND ILL NEVER FORGET THE VETS CALL OR HIS VERSE.
I TRIED TO HURRY BUT ON MY WAY OUT THE DOOR
THE PHONE RANG THE VET HAD CALLED ME ONCE MORE.
HIS WORDS WERE IM SORRY BUT THAT IT WAS TOO LATE
AND THAT GOD HAD STEPPED IN TO DECIDE MAXS FATE.
I SCREAMED AND I CRIED I FELT SO A LONE,
AND HOW WOULD I TELL DADDY WHEN HE CAME HOME.
I WENT TO SEE MAX BEFORE THEY TOOK HIM AWAY
I STROKED AND I KISSED HIM I SAID GOOD-BYE THAT DAY.
NOW ON A SPECIAL SHELF THAT HIS UNCLE AL HAS MADE
SITS MAX IN HIS URN WITH HIS PICTURES THIS DAY.
SOME MAY THINK ITS SILLY BUT WE DIDNT WANT YOU TO BE ALONE,
SO MAX OUR LITTLE BABY WE BROUGHT YOU HOME.
YOUVE GIVEN US SO MUCH LOVE AND WE GAVE YOU OURS IN RETURN,
YOUR SWEET MEMORY DEEP IN OUR HEARTS WILL FOREVER BURN.
WE LOVE YOU MAX,
MOMMY DADDY JAKE MAGGIE
AND TAYLOR
