We had recently moved to a new home with my husband
three sons and our pregnant German Shepherd.
A few weeks later Heidi delivered three puppies two girls and
a still born male during an eclispe of the moon.
We named the puppies Kyriel (the angel who guides the moon)
and Moonshadow. We sold Kyriel and Kept my
Shadow and that is what she became.
This was a very tough time for me having moved from my family
and friends and my children had all began school so Shadow
was my best friend and keeper of my sanity.
We developed a bound that was almost magical.
She seemed to be able to read my mind and was there
when I needed her most. She was my companion on many miles
of jogging and defender from all that she deemed a problem
unfortunately her defense also cost her her life.
Upon the return of a five mile run we encountered a
snake a very large copperhead.
True to her self appointed protective nature she engaged the
threat only to lose. The snake bit her in the throat closing off her
airway and in less than twenty minutes she was gone.
My heart still grieves for this beautiful and heroic companion
even though it has been close to eighteen years.
This is for you my Shadow– you are still loved deeply and
so sadly missed.
I`ll meet you at the gate dear friend.
