The year was 1985 I had just moved to NY from California
to be closer to my folks. It was lonely.
My cousin had a feral cat who’d had kittens so I went up to see
if we could “catch” one. Squirt was the one we caught.
He was just a snip of a thing and he hid under my chin the
whole way home. He continued to be a lovable cat and
slept under my chin every night.
He loved the outdoors and brought me many
“presents to be praised for.
He and I were all alone until one day I knew I needed another pet…
and so along came 6 week old Lucy to brighten our days.
Since then I’ve added 2 more cats 2 dogs and a significant other.
Squirt was stoic through each new addition.
As years have gone by my Squirt started to slow down.
He lost weight and seemed to be content to sleep in the sun.
Occasionally he would still roam outdoors but never for too long.
Finally one morning we just found him….laying down with
his paws curled it looked like he laid down for a nap
only this time he wasn’t going to wake up.
I still cry to think of that day and what came after.
Burying him was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
I have since erected a cross and painted a dove on a
beautiful rock I found.
He lies under a tree and will live on
in my heart forever….
