I had just gotten my first apartment with a friend, and we decided to get two kittens. We went to the Bide-A-Wee shelter in NYC, and we picked up 2 gray and black striped kittens from the same litter,
Mickey Joe and Cindy Lou.
Two years later my friend and I went our separate ways, and she wanted to take a cat with her, but could only take 1. She chose Cindy. I kept Mickey, and for the next 15 1/2 years we were the best of pals. He was such a mushy guy, would cry like a baby, and wanted to be held and petted 24/7. My mother used to insist he said “maaa”, calling me Ma,
instead of a true “meow”.
He developed kidney disease at around age 14, but he stayed steady until he was 17 1/2 years old, and luckily, he got very sick very fast, so he didn’t suffer long. He was the sweetest animal on the face of the earth (but all pet owners say that!!) and I still think about him very often, and still get teary sometimes, but I often smile at the great memories of Mick. Everyone should have a pet that is the “love of their life”, and Mick fits that description for me, and I treasure his memory always.
With love to my tiger boy.
