I rescued Shelby from the animal shelter when she was about six weeks old. She was tiny and sick. As she grew, her legs were so long and awkward, but she grew into them. She was a lean, tall German Shepherd mix with beautiful eyes and a beautiful personality to match.
Shelby and I had a very special bond. She was my only child, my angel. She ran our household and brought twelve and a half years of love and joy to us. Shelby loved to play with her many toys and played hard up until the last few months of her life. She was a 58 pound dog that slept on our bed with us whenever she wanted. She loved to cuddle with me and let me hold her close whenever I wanted to, which was constantly. She was so intelligent and the most loving dog in the world. She touched everyone she met in a special way.
Shelby was diagnosed with cancer in her tongue when she was 11 years old. The surgeons removed the cancer, leaving her with half a tongue lengthwise. Shelby got used to it quickly. Almost one year later, the cancer returned, so we started chemo. Unfortunately, she had a bad reaction. After two blood transfusions, her Oncologist said we did everything we could, but the rest of her body started failing. I thank God that she was able to hold on until we were there to be with her. We were able to hold Shelby as they put her to sleep. I sang her special song to her that I sang since she was a puppy.
I miss my girl so much. I miss staring into those beautiful eyes and holding her. I know her spirit is with me and I know we’ll be together again.
We will always love you, baby girl,
Shelby |
